LocalCoder

A private, local-first coding agent for Visual Studio Code.

Run GGUF coding models through llama.cpp and work directly with the currently open VS Code workspace. After the model and runtime are installed, normal coding assistance can remain on your local computer.

LocalCoder coding robot
Local-first

Keep your everyday coding workflow on your computer.

LocalCoder connects VS Code to a configured local GGUF model. It can understand and work with the open project without sending normal coding requests to a hosted model after the local runtime is ready.

Visual Studio Marketplace Available now

Install LocalCoder from the Visual Studio Marketplace and connect it to a configured local GGUF model.

Features

From workspace edits to builds, APIs, and browser checks.

Read, search, create, update, rename, and delete workspace files with safety checks

Inspect the current project and make focused file changes while remaining restricted to the open workspace.

Require confirmation before file changes, app execution, browser actions, API mutations, and downloads

Review sensitive operations before LocalCoder runs them, so you stay in control of changes and external actions.

Run, build, and publish .NET, Node.js, React, and Docker projects

Use one coding workflow to execute common development commands and report build or publishing errors.

Preview HTML, automate an isolated browser, inspect pages, and capture responsive screenshots

Open workspace HTML inside VS Code, inspect DOM elements, apply temporary CSS, and capture desktop, tablet, or mobile views.

Test REST APIs and download files into the open workspace

Exercise REST endpoints with GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, PUSH, and DELETE, and place approved downloads inside the project.

Apply reusable global and workspace-specific Markdown skills

Give the agent repeatable instructions that apply globally or only to a particular workspace.

Getting started

Connect a model, open a project, and start coding.

LocalCoder lives in the VS Code Activity Bar and keeps confirmations and file differences visible before intended operations are approved.

  1. Start the LocalCoder service and load a configured GGUF model.
  2. Open a project folder in Visual Studio Code.
  3. Select the LocalCoder robot icon in the Activity Bar.
  4. Enter a coding request, inspect confirmations and diffs, then approve the intended operations.
Example requests

Ask for concrete work in plain language.

Create a responsive profile page in profile.html.
Update profile.html to use Bootstrap styling.
Open profile.html in the local browser.
Build this .NET project and report any errors.
Capture mobile and desktop screenshots of https://pwaapps.com.
Safety and privacy

Explicit boundaries around files, browsers, and external actions.

Workspace restricted

File tools are restricted to the open workspace, and existing files are read before updates, renames, or deletions.

Recoverable deletion

Deleted files use the operating system trash when supported.

Confirmed external actions

External mutations and downloads require confirmation before they run.

Isolated browser

Browser automation uses an isolated Edge or Chrome session without the normal browser profile's cookies or passwords.
